Public Lecture Series at NYU

At the final meeting of the public event series held at New York University, Djamila Ribeiro welcomed Nadia Yala Kisukidi, a Philosophy professor at NYU, for a “transatlantic dialogue” on feminism, blackness, and coloniality. The two are co-authors of the book Dialogue Transatlantic (Transatlantic Dialogues), currently available only in French.

“Yesterday (26th), we had a wonderful encounter with Professor Nadia Yala Kisukidi, a partner in books and ideas. The conversation, rich with exchange and learning, addressed themes such as diaspora, Afro-Americanity, and our life trajectories. It was moving to see the auditorium of La Maison Française packed, especially on the eve of the United States’ biggest holiday. Moments like this are worth celebrating!” Djamila wrote on her Instagram profile.

“I would like to thank Professor Jordana Mendelson, director of the KJCC, who not only organized the event but also masterfully opened the session. I’m also grateful to Marina Garde, Luísa Marinho, and the entire teams at CLACS and LMF for their essential collaboration in making it all happen,” the Brazilian philosopher continued.

This meeting marked the conclusion of the series of public discussions organized by Djamila during her tenure as a visiting professor at NYU.

“It was a unique opportunity to work with such a structure and department, which translated into events filled with great learning experiences for all of us, with the presence of intellectuals from diverse backgrounds and nationalities,” Djamila posted. She concluded her message with a special thanks to those who watched the event’s live stream from Brazil.

“P.S. My team hosted a live stream during the event and asked viewers to share where they were tuning in from. I send my love and gratitude to the messages we received from São Paulo, Santos, Jundiaí (SP), São Vicente (SP), Belo Horizonte, Belém, Tomé-Açu (PA), Vitória da Conquista (BA), Feira de Santana (BA), Rio de Janeiro, Campos dos Goytacazes (RJ), Goiânia, Itapema (SC), and Ponta Grossa (PR). Thank you for sharing this moment with us!”

As with the two previous meetings, the conversation between Djamila Ribeiro and Nadia Yala Kisukidi will be available on the YouTube channel of NYU’s KJCC Espacio de Culturas. In the first public event, Djamila hosted Alessandra Devulsky and Selma Dealdina for a discussion on quilombola identity and colorism; the second featured Linda Alcoff, a philosopher from Hunter College and one of the key theoretical influences behind Who Speaks.
