‘Cartas para minha avó’ (‘Letters to My Grandmother’), Djamila Ribeiro’s most recent book, will be published in Portugal by the renowned publishing house LeYa. It is the first Portuguese edition of a work by the Brazilian philosopher.

“It’s a great happiness to know that ‘Letters to My Grandmother’ will be coming to Portugal, even more so because it’s being published by publishing house LeYa, which I admire so much. I was in Lisbon and Coimbra this year and I was thrilled by the Portuguese public’s interest in my works.”

In June, the Brazilian philosopher was in the country for the Coimbra Book Fair and also for The Summer Garden at the Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon, where there was a record audience. “Meeting the black population in Portugal was a joy and an opportunity for exchange. We’ll soon know the exact date of the launch, but I’m already counting the days,” added Djamila.

The Portuguese publisher, Zeferino Coelho, who is responsible for editing José Saramago’s works, says that the Portuguese version of ‘Letters to My Grandmother’ will be built in “close collaboration” with Djamila. According to him, “the expectation is great, above all because of the quality of the text, but also because of the opportunity”.
