The Plural Feminisms Space is pleased to be hosting the launch of the book “1492, Anacaona: A insurgente do Caribe” (“1492, Anacaona the Insurgent of the Carribean”) next Tuesday, July 16, at 7pm, with a book signing by the author Paula Anacaona.

Anacaona was an indigenous princess who, at the age of 18, defied Christopher Columbus when he and his crew landed on the island that today is divided between Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Through her voice, the book relives the history and resistance of the Taínos, offers a historical perspective from the point of view of the colonized and honours the memory of a people massacred by the colonization begun by Christopher Columbus in 1492.

The Brazilian edition, published by Jandaíra Publishing House, was translated by Adriana de Oliveira and features illustrations by the Venezuelan artist Valentina Fraiz.

About the author

Paula Anacaona is a French writer, editor and translator specializing in Brazilian literature. The author of two youth biographies on Jorge Amado and Maria Bonita, she has been translating and publishing in France since 2009 works by Djamila Ribeiro, Jarid Arraes, Conceição Evaristo, Maria Valéria Rezende and Marcelino Freire, among others.

“It’s a joy to welcome Paula Anacaona to the Plural Feminisms Space, who, with her work and love for Brazil, has contributed so much to Brazilian authors reaching the French-speaking public,” celebrated Djamila Ribeiro, president of the Plural Feminisms Institute.

There will be popcorn, beer, water, soft drinks and lots of conversation!
